Our Commitment to Progressive Relationships and Partnerships with Indigenous Peoples

NetBenefit (formerly SCI Resource Software) was originally developed to help companies build local workforce and business capacity in the areas where they operated. Over the last 17 years, the NetBenefit Platform has broadened in scope to focus on things that go far beyond local content. Organizations that use the platform are now leaders in building trust and capacity with both local and historically disadvantaged groups. In particular, as organizations move towards more equitable operations, there has been an increased awareness and focus on building strong relationships with Indigenous Peoples.

Personally, I am ashamed to admit that I have only recently become aware of Canada’s historical treatment of Indigenous Peoples. Since Europeans made contact with what is now Canada, there has been a consistent pattern of racism and colonial treatment of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples. This has resulted in systematic injustice that persists today. At NetBenefit, we fully acknowledge this problem and understand the need for change. However, simply acknowledging the problem is not enough.

In addition to acknowledging the need for improvement, organizations and individuals need to take action for real change to happen. The foundation of our company is built on tracking accurate data to ensure that organizations are taking action and seeing results, as opposed to simply signalling their support. In that spirit, we’d like to share our commitment to the Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) programme provided by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB).

Last year we made a commitment as a company to align our business practices with the more equitable future that we want to be a part of. This month, we formally submitted our Phase 1 Criteria Report for the PAR programme. With our Phase 1 work, we’ve created policies, undergone management training, and taken other foundation building steps to become better allies. For those who are interested, I’ve included our Leadership Statement and PAR Phase 1 Cover Letter below.
